Ballinger Commons Awarded 2010 Shoreline Apartment and Condominium Recycling Champion

Raising the Bar for Apartment/Condo Recycling Programs

Ballinger Commons Apartment complex in Shoreline is a great example of waste diversion in action. By taking advantage of the recycling programs offered by the City of Shoreline and working with CleanScapes' Waste Diversion staff, Ballinger Commons increased their recycling by 27 cubic yards per week in 2009, almost doubling their recycling capacity!

The techniques Ballinger Commons used to decrease their trash output will work for many condos and apartments:

Place recycling containers next to every public garbage container in the facility.
Place large recycling container near resident mailboxes for quick junk mail recycling.

Post signs next to each container telling residents which materials could be recycled.
Work with each resident to ensure educational materials are printed in all pertinent languages.

Going forward, Ballinger Commons plans to continue reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.  They are considering offering a compost program, which would enable them to keep all yard and food waste out of the garbage.  On average, about 30% of all waste that ends up in landfills is compostable, so taking this step would go a long way toward reducing the environmental impact of such a large facility.

Additionally, they are taking advantage of the City of Shoreline’s free recycling program, which allows apartments and condos to recycle double the volume of their garbage for no extra charge! Diverting waste into recycling and compost will enable Ballinger Commons to continue to reduce their monthly garbage bills and make a positive contribution to the environment.

Call (206) 763-4444 to speak with a Waste Diversion staff member about improving the recycling or composting program at your apartment or condo.
