Recycling (Blue Cart)

What do I do with plastic bags?

Plastic bags can not be put in your recycling cart. However, many Shoreline grocery stores offer plastic bag recycling including QFC, Safeway and Central Market. Ask at your favorite store.

Instead of recycling plastic bags, consider reusing them on your next shopping trip; or, avoid collecting more bags than you can use by keeping canvas bags in your car, ready for your next shopping trip.

Can I get recycling service without paying for garbage service?

No. Recycling is included at no charge for customers who pay for garbage service.

The least expensive way to get recycling service is to subscribe to monthly garbage service. The cost forf that service is $4.91 per month. Customers who subscribe to monthly service use a 32-gallon cart provided by CleanScapes.

Monthly garbage service customers’ carts are emptied on their collection day, the last day of the month. For example, if your collection day is Tuesday, your cart will be collected on the last Tuesday of every month.

For information on recycling other items, call the City’s Environmental Programs Assistant at (206) 546-2659 for a copy of the “Where To Take It” flyer, or check the City’s website at www.cityofshoreline.com

How do I dispose of used syringes (sharps)?

Putting sharps in the garbage is a health risk for solid waste workers because a loose needle could injure or possibly infect a worker. There are a number of safe options for disposal of home-generated “sharps:”

  • Put them in a red plastic “sharps container” or in a 2-liter plastic bottle with the lid securely on and take it to the Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station:

    2300 N 165th
    206-296-6542
    Mon - Fri         7:30am to 5pm
    Sun – Sat         8:30am to 5:30 pm

  • Contact your local pharmacy and ask about their “sharps” collection services.
  • Purchase a postage paid, mail-in container. To find out where to purchase, search for “sharps mail in programs” on your computer, ask your doctor, or contact the following companies:

BioMedical Waste Solutions
www.biomedicalwastesolutions.com
1-877-974-1300

GRP & Associates, Inc
www.sharpsdisposal.com
1-800-207-0976

Medasend
www.medasend.com
1-800-200-3581

  • The least preferred option is to put sharps in the garbage. If you do, put them in a 2-liter plastic bottle with the lid securely on and mark the bottle “Sharps – Do Not Recycle.” This method is not supported by the Environmental Protection Agency or the Centers for Disease Control because of the danger it poses to solid waste workers.

Food Scraps & Yard Debris Service

Can I put meat and dairy products in my food scraps & yard debris cart?

Yes. You can now put meat and dairy products in your food scraps & yard debris cart.

Do I have to put food scraps in my yard debris cart?

No, but when you put food scraps and yard debris into your green cart, you conserve resources, save money and create a valuable product - compost.

Food scraps & yard debris service is optional. You are not required to use this service and if you do subscribe to this service, you are not required to put food scraps in the cart. .

Can I put cooked food in my food scraps & yard debris cart?

Yes. You can put any cooked or raw food in your food scraps & yard debris cart.

Why would I want to put food scraps in my yard debris cart?

When you put your food scraps & yard debris in the green cart, you can save money, extend the life of a public resource (Cedar Hills Landfill) and create a valuable product (compost) used to improve growing conditions and reduce water use in landscaping.

All garbage from Shoreline residences is buried in the county-owned, Cedar Hills Landfill. When you put compostables (food scraps and yard debris) in the garbage, it winds up at Cedar Hills Landfill.  If you put your food scraps and yard debris in the green cart, it goes to Cedar Grove Composting where it is made into compost.

Do I have to use a bag for my food scraps?

No. But if you use a bag it has to be paper or a special compostable bag. Check the Cedar Grove Compost website www.cedar-grove.com for the types of bags available. In Shoreline, compostable bags are sold at QFC and Central Market.

Instead of using compostable bags, you can line your indoor food waste collection container with newspaper, used paper towels or paper bags.
