Waste Prevention and Reuse

Reduce Plastic Bottle Use

Every day Americans discard more than 2,500,000 plastic bottles.  Some bottles are recycled and that’s better than burying them in a landfill but collecting, sorting and recycling bottles into a new product costs money and has environmental consequences.

Here are some ways to save money and conserve resources by reducing the use of “throw away” bottles.

  1. Use a non-disposable, refillable water bottle made of durable plastic or metal
  2. Reuse rather than recycle empty plastic bottles
  3. Keep a supply of refilled water bottles in the refrigerator
  4. Keep track of the number of bottles you recycle each week and make it a goal to cut the number in half each month
