Cleanscapes opens recycling-focused retail store in Issaquah service center

A local garbage company is taking recycling to a new level. CleanScapes has opened a new customer service center in Issaquah that includes a small retail store.

“If we are renting the space anyway,” said CleanScapes President Chris Martin, “why not make it fun and educational?”

“People call us all the time wanting to know what kind of lunchbox to get their kids or whether we have garbage man uniforms for kids or a model garbage truck,” said Martin. “It makes sense to experiment with the idea of a retail presence.”

CleanScapes Opens Gilman Village Store

The garbage hauler for most Issaquah neighborhoods, Seattle-based CleanScapes, is also a tenant at Gilman Village.

CleanScapes renovated a space in the iconic retail center for a customer service center and store. CleanScapes President Chris Martin and Issaquah Mayor Ava Frisinger cut the ribbon on the facility Sept. 21.

Customers can stop at the center — 317 N.W. Gilman Blvd., No. 22 — to ask questions about service and drop off difficult-to-recycle items, such as cellphones.

CleanScapes also offers items meant to help consumers reduce waste — such as stainless-steel water bottles and cloth diapers — and products made from recycled materials, including a bike messenger bag fashioned from inner tubes.

The company started garbage and recycling service in Issaquah on July 1.

“CleanScapes is pleased to be offering this innovative approach to retail and customer service to provide a better experience for the Issaquah community,” said CleanScapes founder and President Chris Martin. “Issaquah residents can come in and pay a bill or drop off hard to recycle items, and they can buy products that reduce waste by replacing disposable items with reusable ones, recycled and recyclable products, and unique, “up-cycled” goods.”

Unique ideas for giving green holiday gifts

You don’t need to keep recycling the same green gift ideas. This year, let’s shake it up a little and get quirky, cool and distinctive with our holiday gifts.

Seattle-area residents are so eco-aware that some might even suffer from “green gift-giving fatigue.”

You may love to receive green holiday gifts, and you may have several people on your list who love them, too. But your sister already has four reusable water bottles, and last year, you gave your best friend a waste-reducing “experience gift” of tickets to a great play. (Two tickets actually, so she could take you.)

You don’t need to keep recycling the same green gift ideas. This year, let’s shake it up a little and get quirky, cool and distinctive with our holiday gifts.

The Recology Store is a new idea as recycling goes mainstream

When the modern ecology movement began in the 1960's the idea of protecting the environment was largely a fringe idea, led by protestors carrying signs.

Decades later the ideas behind recycling, conservation, less pollution and caring for our world have finally come to the mainstream. Leading the way is a new store that just opened in Burien at 15858 1st Ave. South, The Recology Store.
