Ever wondered whether scaling vertical heights, hurtling down a mountain, or exploring the deep blue sea might be for you? Pursuing an outdoor passion in the Pacific Northwest doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg – so go out on a limb and get lucky! Gently used specialized gear abounds in the region, and there's always a first time for a second time around!
There are so many avid athletes in our midst that gently-used sports equipment is readily available at second-hand retail stores like Play It Again Sports, 2ndBase, Goodwill, and Second Ascent, as well as online at Freecycle and Second Ascent’s online store.
Purchasing used equipment is a simple way to save resources and money while keeping used items out of the landfill. Renting equipment is another great “reuse” alternative if you are trying a sport for the first time, or only plan to play a few times a year.
Finally, if you have equipment you no longer need, consider donating to Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, or Deseret Industries. Someone else can pick up your used gear, and the cycle will begin again!
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, US households disposed of 21 million tons of durable household goods – which include sporting goods, luggage and consumer electronics – in 2011. Most of these goods – a whopping 19.8 million tons – ended up in the landfill in that same year.
