SEATTLE, WA – Representatives from Northeast Seattle neighborhoods have chosen three projects to be built with $50,000 in funding from CleanScapes. The funding is a reward to the neighborhoods of Wedgwood, Meadowbrook, Inverness, Matthews Beach and View Ridge for reducing the most overall solid waste, recycling and compost among Seattle residents served by CleanScapes.
Residents who comprised the neighborhoods’ selection committee selected the following projects for funding:
Meadowbrook Community Center Community food preservation facility – the project provides classes, equipment and supplies for canning, drying and otherwise preserving foods.
View Ridge Elementary School Community play space – project elements include an outdoor gathering space and seating for students and the community (during non-school hours) as part of a multi-phase, PTA-funded playground renovation to begin this summer.
Hunter Farms; NE 80th/35th Ave NE Gathering place information – signs will inform the community about Hunter Farms, a private lot open for public use to foster community and provide a central and welcoming location for public gatherings and events.
In the annual Neighborhood Waste Reduction Rewards competition, CleanScapes challenges the neighborhoods it serves to reduce their solid waste footprint. To increase their odds of winning, residents can implement a variety of waste reduction measures, for example:
compost leaves and grass in the yard
use washable, durable items rather than disposable items, for example, cloth rags instead of paper towels, ceramic or washable plastic dishware and cloth rather than disposable napkins
share tools with neighbors or borrow from the NE Seattle Tool Library
donate unwanted but usable items to charity or second hand stores
