Issaquah, WA – On Sunday, May 17 Recology CleanScapes, in partnership with the City of Issaquah, will host a Kids Bike Rodeo at Pickering Barn in Issaquah.
The event, held during National Bike to Work Month, provides children with an opportunity to learn about bike safety, riding skills and proper helmet fitting. The City of Issaquah Police Department is providing a limited number of youth bike helmets and staff from Bike Works will be on hand to fit helmets for kids.
Bicycle Center of Issaquah will be teaching the “ABC’s” of bike safety and the Issaquah Police Dept will be hosting a bike safety course. Compass Outdoor Adventures will be leading Geocache treasure hunt rides around Pickering Barn. The Kids Bike Rodeo will also include local vendors, music, refreshments and raffle prizes.
“The Bike Rodeo is a great way to get children engaged on the benefits of bicycling,” said Mary Joe de Beck, from the City of Issaquah Office of Sustainability team. “The City of Issaquah has a goal to promote ‘active transportation’ in our City and we are pleased to be providing our youth with this unique opportunity to become more involved in bicycling.”
The Issaquah Kiwanis Club and Downtown Issaquah Association have generously contributed towards providing free kids bike helmets for this event. Other community organizations offering support include: The Issaquah Press, My Chef Lynn, Superior Seconds and Top Pot Doughnuts.
Since 2010, Recology CleanScapes has saved more than 10,000 bicycles from landfills through their partnership with Bike Works, a local non-profit that refurbishes bikes to be sold or donated locally and internationally. Those who donate a used bike at this event will receive a raffle ticket for great prizes! The event is free to attend and the organizers are encouraging all participants to reduce the amount of waste created at the event by doing things like bringing refillable water bottles.
“The Kids Bike Rodeo is a great opportunity to promote bike safety and education,” said Brenda DeVore, Recology CleanScapes Retail Store Manager. “By providing the community with an opportunity to donate used bikes, we are able to reuse resources that will promote healthy lifestyles for kids in the community.”
The Kids Bike Rodeo will be held at Pickering Barn located at 1730 10th Ave NW in Issaquah from 9am – 12pm. More information can be found by visiting: recologycleanscapes.com/news/kids_bike_rodeo_2015
