Hosting an Eco-Friendly Academy Awards Party

Rolling out the green carpet…

While stars are lining up along the red carpet, you can roll out the green carpet for your family and friends at your very own viewing party...and walk away with the award for best environmental achievement!

• Forego paper invitations for electronic versions. On the invitations, encourage your guests to shop for evening gowns and tuxes at Goodwill, Value Village or Buffalo Exchange.

• Make voting ballots, VIP Entrance signs and other party décor from used cards, office or scrap craft paper.

• Use reusable and washable plates, platters, silverware, napkins and cups. In addition, you can decrease packaging waste by buying food and drink in bulk or at local farmers markets and serving drinks in pitchers instead of individual serving containers.

• For easy post-event clean up, set out and clearly mark your recycling and food waste bins.

The Big Picture

Since 2007, the producers of the Academy Awards have made great strides towards reducing the environmental impact of the telecast and related events[1]. Some of the efforts include:

• Red carpet made from recycled water bottles

• Reusable china and glassware and compostable silverware used during the event

• Food waste collected and composted off site

• All glass, plastic and aluminum is collected and recycled
