Are you are interested in conserving natural resources, improving the quality of our air or water, or addressing climate change? Consider the concept of conscious consumption – think before you buy, you’ll save money, too!
When planning your next purchase, ask yourself:
Could I borrow or rent the item, tool, appliance, equipment, car, etc. that I need? Could I fix/repair the one I have?
Are there durable, washable, or reusable alternatives to the single-use or disposable items, dishware, bottled water, utensils, party supplies, napkins, paper towels, baby diapers I need?
Is this paper item (card, writing paper, folder, toilet paper) or plastic item (toy, utensil, cup, lumber for my new deck) made from recycled content? When I’m done with it can I recycle it?
Could I get that party dress, special outfit, jewelry, furniture, kitchen gadget, retro fixture, or office equipment/supply, at a consignment shop or secondhand store?
Is there a more energy efficient refrigerator, water efficient washing machine, lower emission car, or heat efficient furnace or space heater?
The manufacture, transport and disposal of the goods and services we consume causes 29% of the greenhouse gas emissions we produce in the United States. This is more than any other source including building heating/cooling (25%), passenger transportation (24%), provision of food (13%), use of appliances (8%), and infrastructure (1%).
