Cheer Up and Gear Up!

Sunshine is just around the corner, so get a head start on gear! The Pacific Northwest is the perfect playground for outdoor activities, whether you prefer water sports, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, organized sports or even skydiving.

Many sports require expensive specialized gear but don’t let that stop you from indulging your passion for a new sport. Luckily, there are so many avid athletes in our midst that gently-used sports equipment is readily available online and in second-hand retail stores like Second Ascent, Play It Again Sports, 2ndBase, or Goodwill

Purchasing used equipment is a simple way to save resources and money while keeping used items out of the landfill. Renting equipment is another great “reuse” alternative if you are trying a sport for the first time, or only plan to play a few times a year.

The Big Picture

In 2010, the US Environmental Protection Agency sponsored the “Our Planet, Our Stuff, Our Choice” video competition to raise awareness about the connection between the environment and the "stuff" people use, consume, recycle, and throw away. Over 250 people responded and 10 winners were selected.
