CleanScapes unveils natural gas garbage truck, wildlife-resistant containers for Issaquah

The next garbage hauler for most Issaquah residents, CleanScapes, rolled out a compressed-natural gas truck and wildlife-resistant containers in recent days, as the company prepares to start service in the city.

The contract between Seattle-based CleanScapes and the city starts July 1, though service in the city does not commence until July 2 because July 1 is a Sunday.

Garbage Truck Driver Saves Baby in Runaway Stroller

A baby in a runaway stroller was saved by a quick thinking garbage truck driver.

Jeff Blackburn was behind the wheel of his Seattle garbage truck when he saw the infant’s mother lose control of the stroller on a steep city street.

“Almost immediately when she turned the corner the stroller started to turn and roll down the hill,” Blackburn said.

Blackburn started honking his horn and sped up to catch the stroller.

“Luckily when I was honking the horn a Fedex truck was going through the intersection and stopped because he heard the horn honking,” Blackburn said.

He parked his truck in the middle of the road to block traffic and ran toward the runaway baby boy, who was smiling when Blackburn finally caught up with him.

The panicked mother was relieved and walked away with her son, who was unharmed.

Blackburn is being hailed as a hero, but insists he was “just in the right place at the right time.”

CleanScapes Prepares to Start Issaquah Garbage Service

Customers can expect to see green-and-orange CleanScapes garbage trucks along Issaquah streets after July 1 and, in the meantime, postcards from the company in mailboxes.

The next hauler for Issaquah garbage launched a community outreach campaign in recent days, as the city prepares to change from Waste Management to CleanScapes. The effort is meant to inform residents about options for curbside recycling and cart sizes and, for about 1,000 customers, a collection day change.

Conservation and businesses: a basic carbon concept?

Check out this great piece on the debut of C3 - a partnership we're proud to be a founding member of...

When the invitation to Forterra’s annual Conservation Awards Breakfast went out, it had an intriguing question attached to it:  What do Forterra, Pearl Jam, the Seattle Sounders, Molly Moon’s Ice Cream, the Woodland Park Zoo and the Seattle Aquarium have in common?

At the Thursday (May 17) breakfast, attended by nearly 2,000 people at the Washington State Convention Center, the answer was they are all part of a program to mitigate carbon emissions by planting trees throughout the region.  Forterra’s program, Carbon Capturing Companies, or C3, aims at recruiting businesses to commit to calculating, reducing and mitigating their carbon output.
