Cleanscapes Opens Garbage, Recycling Store

CleanScapes cut the ribbon on the first-ever garbage and recycling store in Issaquah’s Gilman Village on Friday, Sept. 21. The store and customer service center provides face-to-face customer service and offers creative products and gifts to reduce waste, recycle and reuse up-cycled materials.

“CleanScapes is pleased to be offering this innovative approach to retail and customer service to provide a better experience for the Issaquah community,” said CleanScapes founder and President Chris Martin. “Issaquah residents can come in and pay a bill or drop off hard to recycle items, and they can buy products that reduce waste by replacing disposable items with reusable ones, recycled and recyclable products, and unique, “up-cycled” goods.”

U-District Neighborhoods Awarded $50,000 For Reducing Waste

Residents of several U-District neighborhoods reduced their waste by 400 tons last year — and their reward is $50,000.

CleanScapes, which collects garbage, recycling, and food and yard waste for commercial customers in northeast and central Seattle, has been hosting an annual waste reduction competition among collection areas since 2009. Between September 2010 and August 2011, the residents in the “Tuesday North” pickup area, which is comprised of the Ravenna, Roosevelt, Bryant, and Wedgwood neighborhoods, made a 4.7 percent reduction in their waste, according to CleanScapes. The competition led to an overall loss of 1,226 tons of waste within Seattle in 2011.

The $50,000 prize the company gives out is intended for community projects. The neighborhoods will be pursuing three projects: a new tool-lending library in association with Sustainable NE Seattle, additions to the Picardo Farms P-Patch, and neighborhood identification signs designed by students and residents.

Cleanscapes opens recycling-focused retail store in Issaquah service center

A local garbage company is taking recycling to a new level. CleanScapes has opened a new customer service center in Issaquah that includes a small retail store.

“If we are renting the space anyway,” said CleanScapes President Chris Martin, “why not make it fun and educational?”

“People call us all the time wanting to know what kind of lunchbox to get their kids or whether we have garbage man uniforms for kids or a model garbage truck,” said Martin. “It makes sense to experiment with the idea of a retail presence.”

New Issaquah garbage hauler could mean fewer missed pickups

As the mechanical arm on the garbage truck shakes a can overheard, the 25-ton dumper jostles like a red wagon rolling down a rocky hill.

Rodney Watkins, who has been a hauler for 10 years, checks a camera monitor to see if can is empty. A few more bangs and the arm lowers the bin to the curb.

Technology has completely changed garbage collection in the past five years, and Cleanscapes is leading the way, he says.

Issaquah switched its garbage hauler from Waste Management to CleanScapes as of Monday morning. While cheaper rates and rebranded cans are a certainty for residents, the company says locals will also find unmatched customer service.
