Q: Can I recycle the plastic plant containers that new plants come in? - SEATTLE

A: Dear Mack,

Green thumbs Seattle rest assured: The heaps of empty plastic plant pots sitting outside your garden shed can all be recycled in your curbside recycling! Just be sure to give them a good shake and a rinse. Loose dirt can contaminate loads of recyclables.

Recyclable nursery pots include square and round pots and seedling trays of all colors.

Take your gardening practices one step “greener” by returning these pots and trays for reuse. Many nurseries take backused pots and trays. Call the Garden Hotline at (206) 633-0224 to find a drop off location near you.

Terra cotta pots are not recyclable. Used terra cotta pots can be donated at second hand or Good Will shops. Broken terra cotta belongs in the garbage.
