School Waste Reduction Challenge

Recology CleanScapes invites public elementary schools in Des Moines that have not yet participated in the King County Green Schools program to compete in the 2015 Waste Reduction Challenge! To participate, schools sign up to be a King County Green School and work to expand recycling and reduce waste – actions which fulfill Level One of the Green Schools program. Schools that attain a Level One by April 2015 will win a $2,500 capital project.

Projects may include:

  • Play equipment

  • School gardens

  • Sports equipment

  • Permanent art installations

  • Water bottle filling stations

To participate in the Challenge, submit the King County Green Schools application.

Why Reduce Waste?

Every year, approximately 10,000 tons of garbage are collected from Des Moines' residents and businesses and buried in the King County landfill. Roughly 75% of that could have been recycled or better yet, not created in the first place!
