CleanScapes education staff offer engaging and hands-on waste reduction, recycling and composting workshops for preschool, elementary and middle school students in Seattle, Shoreline and Des Moines. Middle School Student Waste Audits

Is your school recycling or composting everything it can? There is no better way to find out than by having the students and staff help conduct an onsite waste audit. CleanScapes staff will bring all of the audit tools necessary to lead students through a professional waste audit process. A clear picture of waste reduction and diversion opportunities for your school is sure to emerge!

• Small student groups (5-10) are lead step by step through a professional waste audit process
• Audit can include one day’s worth of waste from the cafeteria, classrooms or the whole school
• Audit worksheets guide students through a data collection and recording process
• Students learn how to measure waste volume, weight and how to calculate the school’s diversion
• Students work together to create a  diversion report for the school

 

“Too Good to Waste!” Elementary School Workshops

CleanScapes elementary school workshops are a great way to familiarize students with an understanding of what goes where, what happens to recyclables, compost and garbage and how they can make a difference by reducing waste.

• Introduction to recycling, composting and waste reduction concepts
• Students share items they have brought in and recycling questions they have
• Student volunteers use storyboards to help narrate the story of where everything goes
• In-class mock waste audit invites each student to become a “garbage inspector”
• CleanScapes educators lead students through a waste reduction brainstorm, providing local examples of all the ways individual actions can add up and make a big difference

 

Recycle Truck Visits

CleanScapes preschool program is a great way to introduce recycling concepts to the little ones (and adults!) and a unique opportunity for kids to get up close to the big green vehicle they see regularly in their neighborhood.

• Introduction of what recycling is and what can be recycled
• Story time with a recycle truck driver
• Meet the recycle truck and learn how it works
• Take a seat behind the big steering wheel
