What is the new e-cycle law in Washington State? Can I really recycle electronics for free?

A: Dear Christopher,

Washington State now has a network of free drop-off locations for unwanted electronics. This service began January 1, 2009, thanks to a Washington State law passed in 2006 that puts the onus on electronics manufacturers to pay for recycling costs associated with their products. Washington is only the second state in the nation to enact this type of legislation. The new change means households, small businesses (less than 50 employees), charitable organizations, schools and school districts, special purpose districts, and small governments in Washington can now recycle the following items for free:

•  Televisions
•  Computers
•  Computer Monitors
•  Portable or Laptop Computers

There are dozens of drop locations across King County, and it’s easy to find one near you. Why, you ask, should you take these unwanted electronics to a recycling drop-off location? With so many free drop locations, the effort is small, but the environmental returns are huge. When electronics are recycled, resources are reused. Additionally, toxic materials are safely disposed of, and kept out of the environment.

Don’t forget! Electronics that still work don’t need to be recycled just yet. Find a donation location near you and extend the life of your electronics.
